Russell Young: Dirty Pretty Things at Scream Gallery

Scream Gallery is thrilled to present a major solo exhibition of internationally acclaimed artist Russell Young. Fresh from his exhibition of ‘Diamond Dust Paintings’ in Palm Beach, Florida, Young will sprinkle a bit of fairy dust over the Scream Gallery.
Key works in the show are Young’s ‘Diamond Dust’ works on linen, including new screen prints of a triptych Goddess of the Hollywood Golden Age Marilyn Monroe, and musical icon Kurt Cobain, both historical figures who met premature and tragic ends. Familiar faces from contemporary culture will populate the gallery walls including; a youthful Mick Jagger with strawberry-coloured pout; a glittering Elizabeth Taylor; a 70’s era Keith Richards striding towards his limo in "I've never had a problem with drugs. I've had problems with the police"; and the young Ronnie Woods captured in "When I'm left on my own I'm my own worst enemy". Young has also created a unique limited edition ‘Dirty Pretty Things; screen-print of Jagger for the Scream exhibition.
Young’s use of diamond dust mixed in with his paint, pays opulent reverence to the celebrities.

The process of creating Young’s Diamond Dust screenprints is a closely guarded secret, although it has been revealed that all the works are ‘hand pulled’ on the ‘sister press’ of the very printing press used by Andy Warhol, the original creator of the celebrity screenprint.
Don’t be fooled into thinking these are merely a candy-coloured homage to Young’s favourite actors and musicians, there is also a more menacing edge to his oeuvre. The exhibition will also feature the dark side of the high life, with images such as "If you die you're completely happy and your soul somewhere lives on", showing the scene of Cobain’s suicide; and the moment in 1974 when heiress turned bank robber Patty Hearst, was caught on camera mid-heist.
At last year’s Miami Art Basel, the artist explored the negative side of our culture in a live performance. Young - soaked in sweat and tears - demonstrated his unique screen-printing style, using his blood to create screen prints of guns.
I am fascinated by the way light bounces off the three-dimensional surface of my Diamond Dust paintings. In this series light and the way it is reflected is as important as the subject matter. I have hung these paintings from trees in my garden at night under a full moon, where the surface of the bible black paintings are touched by the cool blue hue of the moonlight, Russell Young
Young created the iconic image of George Michael for his ‘Faith’ album cover over 20 years ago, and photographed other legendary musicians including Springsteen, Dylan and Morrissey, before going on to direct 100 music videos during MTV’s golden age.
It was a natural progression to painting, and Young’s first exhibition ‘Pig Portraits’ was a sell out, his imposing silkscreen paintings quickly becoming highly sought after by major collectors. A contemporary Pop artist, in the vein of Andy Warhol, Young finds his inspiration in popular culture, newspaper cuttings, the Internet, correspondence with various police departments and celebrities, and his own deep well of experience. What was initially a mission to create anti-celebrity portraits, ended up in a body of work that is hauntingly beautiful and desirable. Young lives and works in New York and California, and is married to actress/ TV presenter Finola Hughes.

Scream Gallery is delighted to unveil a stellar line-up of artists from its recently launched popular culture collection including; Dennis Hopper, Russell Young, Mark Hayward, Grace Slick, Peter Dohery, R. Crumb and Ronnie Wood. The winter exhibition features images of some of the most iconic figures from contemporary culture, such as a punk-era Vivienne Westwood photographed by William English, and Andy Warhol captured by the lens of Dennis Hopper in Andy Warhol (with flower) (1963). Legendary Hollywood Actor Hopper, is also a revered photographer, who ran with Warhol’s hip Factory set in the 60’s, and captured with his omnipresent camera other prominent people of the era including; James Brown, Martin Luther King and James Brown.
Internationally acclaimed British photographer Russell Young, brings more Hollywood glamour to the show with his Diamond Dust series, evoking the silkscreen prints of Warhol, by featuring legends of the silver screen such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. Young gives a contemporary twist to his larger than life silkscreen images of familiar faces from the 20th Century, by sprinkling them with a handful of stardust.
New York Curator Brandon Coburn breathes life into the Scream Gallery with this eclectic display of prints and photographs, introducing a taste of more recent icons of our culture by exhibiting two of talented young musician/ artist Peter Doherty’s Blood paintings; One painting is a tender portrait of his ex-lover Kate Moss, Supermodel and darling of the British fashion scene. The image is made more poignant with the use of Doherty’s own blood to create a shroud-like outline of her captivating beauty. The blood is said to lend itself perfectly to exploring the extraordinary personal and physical intensity that characterises so much of Peter’s life and work as an artist in the broadest sense.
Situated in the heart of London’s Mayfair, Scream Gallery is operated by Tyrone and Jamie Wood, sons of Rolling Stone’s guitarist Ronnie Wood. Scream is one of Europe’s leading art galleries, representing some of the finest contemporary artists and photographers. Scream’s avant garde popular culture collection includes hand signed limited editions and original drawings, dating from the 1950s, through modern to contemporary work.
Other works on display are by John Lennon, Sebastian Kruger, R. Crumb, Jimi Hendrix and the afore-mentioned Ronnie Wood. Wood’s portraits of his fellow Rolling Stones band mates, and other famous friends, capture the intimacy of the relationship between subject and artist. EPOH BEECH: 'The Marriage of the Thames and the Rhine'

For Epoh Beech’s latest solo exhibition in London, the accomplished fine artist has created 45 ethereal charcoal drawings, and a hand drawn animation, inspired by Wagner’s The Ring, and Francis Beaumont’s 17th Century tome The Masque of the Inner Temple and Gray’s Inn, Gray’s Inn and The Inner Temple: This Jacobean ‘masque’ was performed at Whitehall Palace in 1613, forming an integral part of the nuptials of the daughter of King James I to Frederick V. The pairing was a metaphorical marriage of Germany with England, and a symbolic union of the Thames and the Rhine.
Beech’s drawings are an investigation into the historic relationship between the Rhine and the Thames. Central characters in Beech’s narrative are Hermes, in the form of a seal, and Pegasus the mythological horse, both bearing witness to the voyage of the imagination, unhindered by the straightjacket of history and time.
An expert draughtsman who trained as a fine artist at Studio Simi in Florence, Beech’s drawings posses an innate romanticism which betrays literary influences such as Goethe, and a passion for music which has encompassed 9 years of violin practice and a passion for Wagnerian compositions. William Kentridge, Anselm Keifer and Samuel Palmer have also been powerful influences on Beech’s practice. The use of charcoal to create such heady imagery is symbolic, and highlights the transformation of dark matter into the light, with a debt to the 15th artists of the Italian renaissance that Beech came across during her studies in Florence.
The fragile, spindly trees featured in Siegfried in the forest are reminiscent of Klimt’s nature paintings, whilst the moonlit mountains described in Pfalzgrafenstein Island evoke the German Romanticist Caspar David Friedrich. Beech has made a natural progression from the series of still narratives, to a 3-minute animation. The animation will be projected in the gallery, and forms a perfect visual compliment to the series of charcoals.
The animation has a dual meaning; it is both symbolic meditation on a journey into the unknown through the eyes of Pegasus and the seal, both on a quest to heal old wounds and create a sense of unity in their universe; and also an exploration of the geographical history of the Thames and Rhine, which at the end of the last ice age formed one single river. Pegasus not only represents justice and wisdom, but also acts as a muse to the Poets.
Beech is currently creating 8 murals in the crypt of St Luke’s Church in London’s Sydney Street. Beech’s training in Florence has infused her work with a Florentine tinge, whilst there is a strong use of narrative, combined with an investigation into the relationship between images, colour and the subconscious. Beech also studied in Cheltenham and London, trained as a specialist painter with Jim Smart, a pioneer of the specialist painting trade, and spent 4 years at Chelsea School of Art. Beech currently lives and works in London, out of the ACAVA studios in West London.
The meditative quality of Beech’s drawings is perhaps a result of the time she spent at a Tibetan Monastery, and her studies in Art Psychotherapy. Previous exhibitions include; Shakespeare and Globe theatre (1998 Shakespeare poem exhibited in Oxford at OUP); Walking 600 miles to Santiago de Compostella across Spain (2002 exhibition); Walking along the Rhine from source (on going) (2004 exhibition). Beech has spent time working in a hospice and prison as an art teacher, has an MA in Art Therapy, and runs art workshops.

THE ART MOSH unites young and emerging contemporary artists, from all corners of the globe, and exhibits their work in one-off ‘Pop-Up’ events in major cities. ART MOSH discovers and nurtures new talent in the art world, breaking down barriers between different media, by fusing art with contemporary music and DJ’s in unconventional venues, providing a breath of fresh air from the constraints of a traditional art gallery.
THE ART MOSH is an innovative concept supported by internationally renowned brand Nixon, in partnership with Wallpaper* and Nissan, and curated by Paddy Barstow of Six 18. Nixon have a history of collaborations with acclaimed Artists, Musicians and Athletes including; former Beatle Ringo Starr, legendary Rocker Ozzy Osbourne, Snowboarder Gigi Ruff and Skateboarder Tony Hawk.
ART MOSH PARIS will feature music by Nightmares on Wax founder and chill-out pioneer DJ EASE, plus Ricky Rankin of Roots Manuva. Local Parisian DJ’s, plus some internationals will DJ at the after-party at Chacha Club. Music will be available on the ART MOSH website after the live event.
ART MOSH is a series of exclusive, by invitation, one night only, multi-media exhibitions in unexpected locations. Featuring photography, painting, sculpture, graffiti, design, DJ sets and live music. ART MOSH has already traveled to Ireland, UK, France and the USA, and is scheduled to land at Door Studios in Paris on 26 November, for an evening of visual and oral delights. Babicka Vodka from Czech Republic will add their own special and exclusive flavour to the proceedings. Movers and Shakers from art, fashion, media, music and other creative industries will be invited to discover some of the most innovative and original young artists working today.
ART MOSH PARIS will feature key players from an eclectic roster of international artists; Axel Pauporte (Belgium); Alexander James (UK); Alexandros Vasmoulakis (ATHENS); Benedict Redgrove (UK); Bose Collins (UK); Case (Germany); Chris Malbon (UK); DMV CREW collective: Bom K, Dran, Jaw (France); Herakut (Germany); Emanuele Sferruzza Moszkowicz (ITALY); Faith 47 (South Africa); Moto 777/ toft – robiov (Paris); Pam Glew (UK); Pomme Chan (UK); SAL (Japan); Tessar Lo (LA) and Yoskay Yamamoto (LA).
The collective of Artists and design agency Bose Collins, will work together to install a ‘Pop Up’ show for one night only, in the DIY spirit of the exhibitions created by the original Generation X Artists - the ‘Beautiful Losers’ of 90’s New York. Graffiti duo Herakut will create an artwork on the night. All artwork will be for sale, and anything unsold on the night will be available on the ART MOSH website after the event which launches in December. The ART MOSH events and website will give the artists a digital platform and global exposure.
Nixon’s LTD collection will also be available at ART MOSH, with a percentage of sales going to charities including the MusiCares MAP Fund and the Tony Hawk Foundation.
Significantly there are two strong contemporary female Artists in the ART MOSH collective; South African graffiti artist Faith 47, and British painter Pam Glew. Faith 47 tags in the spirit of the late Margaret Kilgallen (a member of the afore-mentioned ‘Beautiful Losers’, a key group of skater/ street artists). Glew’s striking cinematic imagery has a pop aesthetic, often reminiscent of Warhol screenprints.
Leading Parisian street Artist BOM. K has been painting graffiti since the age of 15. Artistic duo Herakut (a symbiosis of Hera and Akut), are the Gilbert & George of graffiti art. Working in tandem to create layers of imagery in two individual styles, the fusion of Akut’s photorealism and Hera’s painterly backgrounds, creates an eye-catching and unique artistic hybrid.
Case, founding member of East German spray can crew Ma’Claim, and pioneer of a new style in the international Graffiti scene, will produce a live art piece during ART MOSH PARIS. Alongside fellow Ma’Claim members, Tasso, Rusk and Akut (of Herakut), Case developed a photorealist-style spray can technique.
Photographer Alexander James captures Parkour practitioners in mid-flight, their urban playgrounds lit dramatically like a Gregory Crewdson print; Artist Emmanuele Sferruzza Moszkowicz has collaborated with fashion houses including Michiko Koshino and Cycle, whilst his modern twist on Aubrey Beardsley sees him up there with the top graphic artists.
Each ART MOSH will be a rare gathering of Artists from all corners of the globe, along with some of the best musical talent currently on the scene, and will feature live art. Future ART MOSH events are planned in London and Milan in 2010.

THE ART MOSH unites young and emerging contemporary artists, from all corners of the globe, and exhibits their work in one-off ‘Pop-Up’ events in major cities. ART MOSH discovers and nurtures new talent in the art world, breaking down barriers between different media, by fusing art with contemporary music and DJ’s in unconventional venues, providing a breath of fresh air from the constraints of a traditional art gallery.
THE ART MOSH is an innovative concept supported by internationally renowned brand Nixon, in partnership with Wallpaper* and Nissan, and curated by Paddy Barstow of Six 18. Nixon have a history of collaborations with acclaimed Artists, Musicians and Athletes including; former Beatle Ringo Starr, legendary Rocker Ozzy Osbourne, Snowboarder Gigi Ruff and Skateboarder Tony Hawk.
ART MOSH PARIS will feature music by Nightmares on Wax founder and chill-out pioneer DJ EASE, plus Ricky Rankin of Roots Manuva. Local Parisian DJ’s, plus some internationals will DJ at the after-party at Chacha Club. Music will be available on the ART MOSH website after the live event.
ART MOSH is a series of exclusive, by invitation, one night only, multi-media exhibitions in unexpected locations. Featuring photography, painting, sculpture, graffiti, design, DJ sets and live music. ART MOSH has already traveled to Ireland, UK, France and the USA, and is scheduled to land at Door Studios in Paris on 26 November, for an evening of visual and oral delights. Babicka Vodka from Czech Republic will add their own special and exclusive flavour to the proceedings. Movers and Shakers from art, fashion, media, music and other creative industries will be invited to discover some of the most innovative and original young artists working today.
ART MOSH PARIS will feature key players from an eclectic roster of international artists; Axel Pauporte (Belgium); Alexander James (UK); Alexandros Vasmoulakis (ATHENS); Benedict Redgrove (UK); Bose Collins (UK); Case (Germany); Chris Malbon (UK); DMV CREW collective: Bom K, Dran, Jaw (France); Herakut (Germany); Emanuele Sferruzza Moszkowicz (ITALY); Faith 47 (South Africa); Moto 777/ toft – robiov (Paris); Pam Glew (UK); Pomme Chan (UK); SAL (Japan); Tessar Lo (LA) and Yoskay Yamamoto (LA).
The collective of Artists and design agency Bose Collins, will work together to install a ‘Pop Up’ show for one night only, in the DIY spirit of the exhibitions created by the original Generation X Artists - the ‘Beautiful Losers’ of 90’s New York. Graffiti duo Herakut will create an artwork on the night. All artwork will be for sale, and anything unsold on the night will be available on the ART MOSH website after the event which launches in December. The ART MOSH events and website will give the artists a digital platform and global exposure.
Nixon’s LTD collection will also be available at ART MOSH, with a percentage of sales going to charities including the MusiCares MAP Fund and the Tony Hawk Foundation.
Significantly there are two strong contemporary female Artists in the ART MOSH collective; South African graffiti artist Faith 47, and British painter Pam Glew. Faith 47 tags in the spirit of the late Margaret Kilgallen (a member of the afore-mentioned ‘Beautiful Losers’, a key group of skater/ street artists). Glew’s striking cinematic imagery has a pop aesthetic, often reminiscent of Warhol screenprints.
